Some people are even waxing lyrical about newer Chauvet stuff, when that company could once be considered the epitome of disco tat.

What am I missing? And how much of this bottom end stuff is actually buyable without regrets, and by whom? Is it more often than not the question of whether your stuff is touring or on hire every week, or spends most of is life rigged or stored away in a flightcase?

By coincidence I have just used a couple of the the iMove 5S W last week, and while I would never spec them given a choice was a last minute borrow for a gymnastics show to add some je n'ai sais quoi they were alright.

I didn't find them too noisy although they were floor mounted about 10m away Didn't get much use of the colours - they appear to be unable to set the color while dark ie with the shutter in so you get treated to a rainbow as the cue comes in, even with a snap to full shutter.

I reckon they'd be brilliant for disco, and did me fine for my show, as they weren't vital to anything, but for a replacement to a more reputable brand - I wouldn't. Maybe pay your beer money and use them for chases, and hire in fewer 'decent' movers for essential stuff?

I think you;d get away with that, as for chases they'd be fine. I fear you've kind of proved my point about the product confusion thing- were you using a 5S hmi with w hmi, a 5s with with w halogen or a s or sp with w hmi lamp?

The product description for the s claims a dimmer channel. There also seems to be an iMove 8s which is terribly similar to an iMove s, both of which have a w msd lamp, but the s seems to be the newer model, with an extra effect wheel and a channel DMX mode. I do wonder if the poor repeatability is a general characteristic of the bottom end of the scanner market. Fair point, it was the 5S. It's manual however claims "ultra smooth stepping motors" which I personally don't agree with as I menioned - I was using a couple of their other bits scans and wash light and to be honest just didn't like them for use in a theatre style setting especially as they were all disco stuff the build quality of the whole lot was Stick to what you know.

Alternatively would it be possible to go see the kit in use on another event to see how they do? Obviously a chance to play would be nice, but as you say this may be a little cheeky. The colour mixing and changing in the Ws is quick enough for me especially in CMY mode only , the noise doesn't seem to be a problem, definately no louder than say a Mac K. One thing I have maybe spotted is that on the spots the motors controlling movement maybe could do with being a bit more responsive but we come back to the original point of - Do you wanna buy these for the money or get second hand Macs which could be on their last legs?
